Husband & Wife Both Onstage and Off

On October 19, husband and wife Broadway stars Michele Pawk and John Dossett took over the leading roles of Donna Sheridan and Sam Carmichael in Mamma Mia! at Broadway's Cadillac Winter Garden Theatre. Our correspondent Ben Pesner visited the pair in Ms. Pawk's dressing room after a Wednesday matinee performance.

Ben Pesner: How did you guys end up in the show together? A lucky coincidence, or were you cast as a package?

Michele Pawk: Well, I had to audition!

John Dossett: She auditioned, and I jokingly said, “What about me?” We have the same agent, and so when he presented the idea to the show they said it seemed like a good idea.

You share a lot more than just the same agent—you have a son.

John: Yes, we share him as well. [Laughs]

Michele: The same son. [Laughs]

John: Jack knows all the Mamma Mia! songs. You haven't lived until you've heard a five-year-old sing “Gimme gimme gimme a man after midnight.”

Michele: In the supermarket in New Jersey! [Laughs]

Mamma Mia! has a lot to say about marriage and parenthood. As a married couple with a child, how does the show speak to you?

Michele: The first thing for me is the whole idea of letting go. I have a fantastic song called “Slipping Through My Fingers.” I don't think there's a parent in the audience that doesn't relate to that in some way. You wake up one day and you realize, “Oh my gosh, he's getting on the school bus now.” Where does that time go? In the case of the show, it's “Oh my gosh, she's getting married.” Carey Anderson, who plays my daughter in the show, actually got married this past weekend. She made her Broadway debut on Wednesday night, and then got married on Friday. I'll never forget that Thursday performance. When she turned to me and said, “Mom, will you give me away?”, tears were streaming down her face, and I had mascara all over.

Many people go to work during the day and then spend their evenings with their kids. With you two it's been a little different.

John: We've had the great luxury of being able to be with our son during the day, then working at night. Most people don't get that. They just get a few hours at night.

Michele: Until this show we didn't really both work at the same time. Our schedules have been opposite a lot. When you're on different shows, you never see each other. So for us, part of the plus of taking this job is we can spend all this time together. I love it. I love looking at John across the stage. It's a gift. How many people get that opportunity?

You first worked when you met doing Hello Again Off Broadway in 1993. Was it love at first sight?

John: Very shortly thereafter! I got cast in Hello Again , and they were looking for this other part, an actress. [Director/choreographer] Graciela Daniele called me and said, “John, we finally found the woman to play the actress. She's perfect. You're going to love her.” Little did I know how prophetic those words would be.

And a dozen years later, it seems like you guys are having a blast in Mamma Mia!.

Michele: It's fantastic.

John: We get to make out in front of thousands of people every day. I get to kiss my wife on stage, and get paid for it. What could be better than that?

The Eisenhower Hall Theatre
at West Point, NY

When you think of West Point, NY, you probably think...theatre? More likely you think of West Point as the home of the prestigious United States Military Academy. What you may not know is that West Point is also home to the Eisenhower Hall Theatre, the Hudson Valley's premiere performing arts center containing New York State's second-largest auditorium (behind only Radio City Music Hall in New York City).

"Many people are surprised to discover a large performing arts center on the grounds of a military institution," says Bill Yost, Director of the Eisenhower Hall Theatre, "but in fact, there are some very specific parallels between theatre work and military training. The work is exacting and happens under considerable stress, and it requires a great deal of discipline and practice."

Cadets at West Point are involved in backstage work at the theatre, participating in a theatre club known as the Theatre Arts Guild where they are trained as sound, lighting, and wardrobe technicians. They regularly travel to New York City to see Broadway shows, and some graduates have even gone on to careers in entertainment after fulfilling their military commitment.

"The cadets come from every state," says Yost, "and when they leave the Academy they are disbursed world-wide. My contribution is to help foster their social and cultural development, and to offer them an international language that they can take with them wherever they go."

The audience at the Eisenhower Hall Theatre is not purely military, but comes from all over the Hudson Valley region. Typical season attractions include a full line-up of touring Broadway plays and musicals alongside opera, dance, symphony orchestras, and special appearances by Broadway and music stars.

  The August Wilson Theatre

On October 2, 2005, Tony Award® and Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright August Wilson died of liver cancer at the age of 60. On October 16, the Virginia Theatre (245 West 52nd Street) was rededicated in his honor by Jujamcyn Theatres, which operates the venue, as the August Wilson Theatre. Jujamcyn will produce Radio Golf, August Wilson's last play, on Broadway next season.

Radio Golf is the final work in Wilson's landmark ten-play cycle depicting elements of the African-American experience in each decade of the 20th century. Eight of the nine other plays in the cycle have been produced on Broadway (Jitney was produced Off Broadway), garnering the writer 8 Tony Award® nominations for Best Play.
