Theatre/Opening Night: American Airlines Theatre - October 22
The Story: Sequestered in her grandmother's country house on the eve of the Labour Party's historic 1945 landslide victory, young Miss Julie engages in a forbidden flirtation that quickly spins into a life and death struggle for power.

Trivia: This is an update of the classic August Strindberg play Miss Julie by Patrick Marber (Closer).

The Neil Simon Plays: Brighton Beach Memoirs

Theatre/Opening Night: Nederlander - October 25
The Story: Jewish teen Eugene Jerome copes with his family's troubles, his awkward discovery of the opposite sex, and his developing identity as a writer.
The Stars: Laurie Metcalf and Dennis Boutsikaris
Trivia: Neil Simon's semi-autobiographical comedies Brighton Beach Memoirs and Broadway Bound were two of the longest-running Broadway plays of the 1980s. They will be presented in repertory (see below).

The Story: An Irishman and his daughter travel to a small Southern town with plans to bury a stolen pot of gold in the shadows of Fort Knox, in the mistaken belief it will grow and multiply.

The Story: The dawn of the 20th century was a time when anything was possible in New York City, and ragtime music filled the air.

Trivia: Based on E. L. Doctorow's epic novel, Ragtime originally opened on Broadway on January 18, 1998, and later won four Tony Awards.

Theatre/Opening Night: Eugene O'Neill Theatre - November 23
The Story: A revolutionary new musical that welcomes audiences into the extravagant, decadent, and rebellious world of Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo Kuti.
The Stars: Sahr Ngaujah, Antibalas, and other members of the NYC Afrobeat community.
Trivia: An artist, political activist and musician, Fela was arrested more than 200 times but continued to live in Nigeria despite the harassment. A million Nigerians attended his funeral in 1997.

Race

Theatre/Opening Night: Ethel Barrymore – December 6
The Story: David Mamet's newest play confronts central issues of our times.
The Stars: David Alan Grier, James Spader, Richard Thomas, Kerry Washington
Trivia : Race will be the fourth Mamet play to perform at the Barrymore Theatre (after Speed-the-Plow, November, and American Buffalo). This will be the third consecutive season for the Barrymore to host a Mamet play.

The Neil Simon Plays: Broadway Bound

Theatre/Opening Night: Nederlander – December 10
The Story: Eugene and his older brother Stanley have started their careers as professional comedy writers, but at home in Brighton Beach, their parents' marriage is falling apart.

Tonys Receive a Pair of Emmy Noms

The 62nd annual Tony Awards® telecast - that's the 2008 show, hosted by Whoopi Goldberg - received two Primetime Emmy Award nominations. The program was honored in the Outstanding Special Class Programs category. The show also picked up a nomination for Outstanding Technical Direction, Camerawork, Video Control for a Miniseries, Movie or a Special. Executive Producers Ricky Kirshner and Glenn Weiss previously won the Emmy Awards for Tony telecasts in 2005 and 2007. Weiss also received and Emmy for Outstanding Directing for a Variety, Music or Comedy Program in 2003 for the 56th Annual Tony Awards.

 
     
   
     
 

Neil Patrick Harris Will Host the Emmy Awards

Having earned universal praise from Broadway and beyond for the charm and humor he brought to the airwaves as host of the 63rd annual Tony Awards telecast in June, Neil Patrick Harris has snagged another high-profile awards-show gig. He will host the 2009 Primetime Emmy Awards, which will be presented Sept. 13 at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles. The show will be broadcast live on CBS beginning at 8:00 p.m. ET. Longtime Tony Awards telecast director and executive producer Glenn Weiss will direct.

 
     
   
     
 

South Pacific Tour Begins

The hit Broadway production of Rodgers & Hammerstein's musical tale of wartime love will kick off its national tour in San Francisco on September 18, with engagements across the country to follow. Grammy-nominated opera singer Rod Gilfry starts as Emile de Becque.

 
     
   
     
 

God of Carnage Takes a Vacation

The Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre, home to Yazmina Reza's 2009 Tony Award®-winning play God of Carnage is dark – but don't worry. This “comedy of manners without the manners” starring Jeff Daniels, Hope Davis, James Gandolfini, and Marcia Gay Harden hasn't closed. It's just enjoying a summer hiatus, with performances set to resume on September 7.

 
     
   
     
 
 

Another Honor for a "Billy"

David Alvarez, one of the trio of young hoofers who won 2009 Tony Awards for their performances in the title role of Billy Elliot, the Musical, is among the winners of the 2009 HOLA Awards. Presented by the Hispanic Organization of Latin Actors, the awards ceremony will take place in October.

Spike Lee's Broadway Film

A documentary film by Spike Lee of the recent Broadway musical Passing Strange will begin showing in cinemas on August 21. It will also air on PBS in 2010 as part of the “Great Performances” series. The show was a semi-autobiographical account of the coming-of-age of Stew, the musician/composer who won the 2008 Tony Award for Best Book of a Musical.

 
     
   
     
 

Jerry Lewis Will Direct The Nutty Professor on Broadway

Having co-written and starred in the 1963 film The Nutty Professor, Jerry Lewis will make his Broadway directorial debut with a new stage musical version of the film, which will open in the 2010-2011 season. The show will feature music by Marvin Hamlisch, with book and lyrics by Rupert Holmes.

  • Alicia Silverstone will return to Broadway this winter, co-starring with Laura Linney in Manhattan Theatre Club's production of Time Stands Still by Donald Margulies.
 
     
 
  • Samantha Harris from TV's "The Insider" and "Dancing with the Stars" is making her Broadway debut as Roxie Hart in the long-running hit production of Chicago, through August 16 only. She then plays a one-week engagement with the national touring company of Chicago at the Peace Center in Greenville, SC, on August 18-23.

  • Will Chase (Lennon, In My Life) has taken over the role of Tony, Billy's older brother, in Billy Elliot, The Musical.
  • Justina Machado of “Six Feet Under” is now starring in Broadway's 2008 Tony Award®-winning Best Musical In the Heights.
  • John Dossett and past Tony Award-winner Beth Leavel will join the cast of Mamma Mia! in September.
  • Alan Cumming will play Norman Osborn (the Green Goblin) in Spider-Man, Turn Off the Dark, which premieres on Broadway this winter.
