Fresh from a smashing, sold-out run at Chicago’s renowned Steppenwolf Theatre, AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY is coming to Broadway this fall, featuring the original Steppenwolf cast.
Written by Pulitzer Prize finalist Tracy Letts (author of the runaway hits Bug and Killer Joe), this grand, gripping new play tells the story of the Westons, a large extended clan that comes together at their rural Oklahoma homestead when the alcoholic patriarch disappears.
Forced to confront unspoken truths and astonishing secrets, the family must also contend with matriarch Violet, a pill-popping, deeply unsettled woman at the center of this storm.
Directed by Anna D. Shapiro, AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY is a rare Broadway event – a large-scale work filled with unforgettable characters, a powerful tale told with unflinching honesty, and the Broadway debut of a major American playwright.
Here are some of the raves from the play’s Chicago premiere:
“HUGELY ENTERTAINING. A ripsnorter full of blistering, funny dialogue, acid-etched characterizations and scenes of no-holds-barred emotional combat.”
– The New York Times
“A MAJOR, NOT-TO-BE-MISSED NEW AMERICAN WORK.”
– Chicago Tribune
“HUGELY AMBITIOUS & SHREWDLY IMAGINED, with TITILLATING SHOCKEROOS.”
– Chicago Sun-Times
“SCINTILLATING. Rich, raw and intense, filled with VICIOUS WIT.” – Variety
